Clay Higgins has tweeted racist rant about Haitian immigrants
Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., called Haiti the “nastiest country in the western hemisphere” in a post on social media Wednesday, saying migrants from the Caribbean country, the majority of whom are in the U.S. legally, should “get their ass out of our country.”
Higgins’ deleted outburst on X responded to an AP article about a Haitian nonprofit’s criminal complaint against Trump and Vance. The complaint stemmed from unfounded allegations, including Trump’s debate claim that migrants in Springfield were “eating dogs and cats.”
Higgins’ post has amplified the debunked pet claim, which has been followed by dozens of bomb threats in the city.
The speaker described Haitians as unconventional, referencing pet consumption, voodoo practices, and the presence of various cults and gangsters.
He expressed a sense of irony regarding their current actions, noting that they now appear to be taking legal action against the President and Vice President, specifically mentioning the Republican nominees Trump and Vance.
The post wrapped up with a strong message: “These troublemakers need to get their act together and leave our country before January 20th.” That date marks the day Trump and Vance would take their oaths of office if they succeed in the November election.
Clay Higgins Disgusting and Dangerous Statement Condemned
Subodh Chandra, the lawyer for the Haitian Bridge Alliance, the nonprofit organization that initiated the legal action, stated that the post “is not a subtle signal but rather a blatant declaration of a threat.”
He stated that in a properly functioning House of Representatives, led by a responsible speaker who prioritizes integrity, this matter would be promptly addressed through an investigation by the Ethics Committee, potentially leading to censure or expulsion.
However, given that the current House majority tolerates antisemitism and racism, we must see if Republican leadership will take action.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said Higgins is a close friend and colleague from Louisiana, known for his candidness and forthrightness. Johnson said he spoke with Higgins on the House floor, who later prayed, expressed remorse, and decided to remove the post.
Higgins’ representative and a Trump campaign spokesperson did not respond to requests for comment regarding the post.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called Higgins’ remarks “vile, racist, and unworthy of the House of Representatives’ dignity.”He asserted that they “must hold Higgins accountable for his dishonorable behavior, inappropriate for a Member of Congress.”
Rep. Steve Horsford, D-Nev., did to censure Higgins on the House floor early Wednesday evening.
“They are fostering hatred. They are instigating fear,” Horsford stated
It is imperative to put an end to hate and the discourse surrounding it. He stated it’s unbecoming for anyone, especially House members, to spread such rhetoric on any platform.
Majority Leader Steve Scalise opposed the motion and noted that someone had already deleted Higgins’ tweet.
He later told reporters that Higgins informed him in advance he had no intention of taking the post down.
I see no remorse from him and ignorance of how his language impacts the harassment and insecurity of communities. “This is why I requested him to delete the post,” Horsford stated. “He explicitly refused my request, which prompted us to initiate action on the floor.”
Most Haitians in Springfield hold legal status under temporary protected status from the Department of Homeland Security. Trump and Vance have vowed to end this protection and swiftly deport these individuals if elected.
