Trump and Harris accuse each other

With the addition of Democratic Vice-President Kamala Harris and her Republican challenger, former President Donald Trump, abortion rights again took center stage in the US as it approaches a presidential election.

Probably, this topic has seen some of the most vehement arguments during the presidential debates. Access to abortion in the US has undergone a sea change in the last couple of years since the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade and took away the constitutional right to abortion.

The decision made in June 2022 transferred authority regarding the procedure back to individual states, resulting in varying access based on geographic location. Certain states have implemented complete prohibitions, whereas others maintain protections for the procedure throughout the entirety of pregnancy.

This diverse landscape of rights is expected to shift once more following the November elections, with the nature of these changes contingent upon the outcomes of the races.

Harris has committed to “restoring” abortion rights at the federal level, while Trump has recently indicated a preference for allowing states to determine the issue. Additionally, some states are conducting referendums specifically addressing abortion.

Democrat lawmaker thrilled with Taylor Swift’s endorsement for Harris

The spin room is gradually emptying, now primarily occupied by weary and fatigued reporters.

Among the remaining lawmakers is Connecticut Democratic Senator Chris Murphy, with whom I recently engaged in conversation in a corner of the room, accompanied by a small group of other journalists.

He described the debate as a “disastrous meltdown” for former President Trump.

Murphy advised, “Observe Donald Trump’s social media activity this evening. It is likely to be quite chaotic. Expect further online disturbances tomorrow. He has been defeated.”

Additionally, Murphy expressed his enthusiasm regarding Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Harris, revealing his admiration for the artist.

“This adds to the growing momentum,” he remarked. “I was an early supporter of Kamala Harris and I am a devoted fan of Swift.”

Did Donald Trump say there will be a ‘bloodbath’ if he loses the election?

During the debate, Kamala Harris referred to the storming of the Capitol on January 6, 2021: “Donald Trump, the candidate, has suggested that there will be a bloodbath in this election if [.] The outcome is not what he wants it to be.”

While Trump has previously employed the term “bloodbath” in reference to the election, it was in a different context concerning trade matters.

In a speech delivered in March of this year, Trump stated: “We will impose a 100% tariff on every single vehicle that crosses the border, and those cars will not be permitted for sale if I am elected.”

Kimberley Clark has dedicated 13 years to her role as an auto worker in Michigan, specifically at a facility that manufactures Dodge pickup trucks.

At a union watch party, she stands out as an undecided voter, precisely the type of individual that both candidates aimed to reach with their messages during the evening’s event in this pivotal swing state.

Following the debate, Kimberley expressed that she approached the discussion with a sincere openness.

She gained a better understanding of Harris and found several of her stances, especially on reproductive rights, commendable.

She clearly stated her lack of enthusiasm for Trump, saying she would not vote for him.

Was the unemployment rate under Trump the worst since the 1930s?

In a heated debate on the economy, Kamala Harris said: “Donald Trump left us the worst unemployment since the Great Depression.” This statement is False.

By the end of the Trump presidency, in January 2021, unemployment stood at 6.4%.Unemployment peaked at 24.9% in 1933 during the Great Depression, exceeding current levels in the larger context.

Added to this, during October 2009 – high of deep economic recession – unemployment had reached as high as 10%. During the same month, the rate has mostly been improving but always features the remarkable increase during the COVID pandemic.

The unemployment rate is 4.2%, according to the latest data available for August 2024.

Harris camp itching for second debate

The Harris campaign is pleased with her performance and is pushing for a second debate between Trump and Harris.

Jen O’Malley Dillon, spokesperson for the Harris-Walz campaign, stated that the proposed debate should occur in October.

She asked, “Is Donald Trump prepared for a second debate? Vice President Harris is ready.”

Currently, officials have not scheduled any additional debates between Trump and Harris before the election on November 5.

The Diplomat News will air the October 1 debate between vice-presidential candidates JD Vance and Tim Walz in NYC.

Soon enough, Tim Scott joined the spin room, and wasted no time declaring tonight’s debate a Donald Trump victory.

“Donald Trump is in the driver’s seat,” he said, calling it “good news” for the United States.

The Senator expressed his frustration when questioned regarding Trump’s denial of the election results, interrupting the reporters as he departed.

It is simple to ridicule Trump’s acceptance of the conspiracy theory suggesting that Haitian immigrants are consuming pets; however, it is essential to highlight that this well-established falsehood aims to vilify a specific demographic for political advantage. Trump evidently seeks to resonate with the Republican base by perpetuating racist narratives about individuals of color. This behaviour is not only disingenuous and repugnant but also entirely unfounded.

The ABC moderators effectively challenged Trump in real time, including a strong refutation of the pet-eating allegation.

“We consulted with Springfield’s city manager,” Muir informed, while Trump persisted with his unusual claim of seeing it on TV.

This exchange is likely to become one of the most talked-about moments of the debate, regardless of Taylor Swift’s endorsement. This development is unlikely to improve Trump’s evening significantly.
